Introduction

Sunrise, Poole Quay, Dorset.
Rick McEvoy Photography - Dorset Photographer Blog
This picture is of a fantastically colourful sunrise in Poole, Dorset. The main subjects of this image are the boats and the sky. The boats moored in the foreground provide interest, colour and context. The boats are framed by the sunrise colours in the sky which are also reflected off the calm, morning waters.

This image was taken from Ballard Road, Poole, looking towards Sandbanks and Brownsea Island in a generally south-easterly direction.

The image was taken not long after sunrise, and just after the sun had risen above the horizon giving the spectacular array of colours in the sky which are reflected in the water.

Technical information.
This photograph is made up of three separate images. The images were taken one January morning at 8am, on my Canon EOS 5D with 17-40mm F4L lens. The exposure setting of the first image was 1/125th second at f5.6, the second image one stop over exposed and he final image one stop underexposed. The ISO setting was 400. The images were taken in the RAW format. I use the AV mode on my camera to take the images, as I wanted the optimum quality that f8 gives with this particular lens.

Processing information
The RAW images were imported into Adobe Lightroom, and these three images quickly selected for further processing. I carried out minor corrections to the first image, which I then applied to the next two images. These adjustments corrected cropping, lens distortion and dust spotting. The three images were then processed in Photomatix, producing a single tonemapped HDR image. By merging the three images using this workflow I have managed to produce detail in both the highlights and shadows that a single image could not reproduce. The processing in Photomatix was minimal, to ensure that the final image was realistic. Too often HDR images look false and artificial, and I did not want such an effect for this image.  The final step in the process was to export out of Lightroom a full resolution Jpeg image.

This is one of many stunning images I have taken of the views in Poole Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world.

More about my work as a Professional Photographer in Bournemouth, Poole, Sandbanks and Dorset.
On my commercial shoots I don’t take thousands of images, just what the brief requires, so my clients are not paying for me to sort and edit hundreds of images that they do not want. Once back in my office I quickly produce a selection of images that satisfy the brief. I usually only send 20-30 images to the client which 99 times out of 100 fully satisfy the brief.

I only ever use Canon professional cameras and lenses, and do all my own digital processing using mainly Adobe software, with some other specialist software to achieve certain effects. For most jobs I have a draft set of images ready within 72 hours of the shoot - quicker if required.
Professional Photography Costs

I usually work on a daily or half daily rate, but can work on an hourly basis or fixed price, whichever is preferred. My price includes everything up to and including the production of an agreed set of copyright free images in whatever electronic format is required.
